This morning I drug myself out of bed at 3 am to go push cows and gather bulls. And while 3 am isn't my favorite time of day to start doing things it seemed fitting that today is National Day of The Cowboy and we were headed out early to do some cowboy shit.
This got me to thinking about all of the things that us in the cow business get to experience that the rest of the world does not.
We were horse back by 5 am which meant we got to watch the sun creep up over the hill tops and through the trees. Montana isn't crazy about sunrises but this morning it sure put on a show! The bright yellow, purple, and pink tones matched with the cotton candy clouds made for the perfect backdrop. I found myself feeling so utterly grateful that I get to live this lifestyle.
I was surrounded my natures beauty while on the back of a cute little grey mare pushing a healthy fat herd of pretty black cattle and couldn't help but feel bad for everyone else who was still sleeping and wasn't enjoying this sight.
Cowboys are some of the most genuine people I've ever had the chance to spend time around. They will give you the shirt off their back if you need it and they are the first to offer help in your time of need! But they also are a wild bunch! They are always having a good time and good lord can they party. If you think your life is boring go to a party with some cowboys and I can guarantee you will no longer be bored!
There is also something about a group of people who work day in and day out to preserve the western heritage and life of way. There are no days off, no calling in sick, and 24/7 there is a chance of having to go to work. Having your living be based off of mother nature and the weather can be stressful and often times feel like a waking nightmare. But the pay off when things go right and you produce healthy and well cared for animals, makes it all worth it!
As we rolled into the yard unloaded bulls, and unsaddled horses I did a little silent salute to those working hard to keep the cowboy way of life alive! Happy National Day of the Cowboy!
